Hillsdale Deck

New deck for a 1959 daylight ranch, set into a hill in southwest Portland. Christie Architecture began the design process by exploring ways to provide a screen of selected transparency to screen the lower outdoor sitting area and the outdoor shower serving the hot tub. Black-stained cedar of alternating profiles created the baseline screen. Arched lines lent energy and movement to the screens, acknowledging the movement between decks.

The black-stained cedar and the raw brown ipe were intended to age together, changing hues over time. The cedar’s warmth shines through the black stain. The upper deck uses a stainless steel cable rail system to keep views clear while seated at the table. The steel stanchions were powder-coated black to minimize their imposition on the views.
